Our Flora and Fauna
Producers
Producers are organisms that can create their own energy through cellular processes using light or chemical energy. Examples of these processes include photosynthesis and chemosynthesis.
Heliconia- They are producers because they produce their own energy source through photosynthesis. (4)
Resurrection Fern- They are producers that become inactive in periods of low rain and wither but then "resurrect" when rainfall increases. (4)
Strangler Fig- They are producers that grow on another plant and act parastically by covering it and taking up its canopy space. Eventually, it kills the host and leaves a giant, hollow pillar of just the strangler fig. (4) (51)
Cow Tree- It is a producer that pumps a thick, white latex through its system and is often used for construction. (4)
Ceiba Tree- It is a producer found in Costa Rica that grows at the extraordinary rate of thirteen feet vertically a year. (4)
Dracontium Flower- This flower is a unique producer that creates a terrible stench that smells like feces to attract pollinators to itself. (4)

Consumers
Consumers are organisms that must digest other organic matter in order to obtain energy using processes such as cellular respiration.
Chestnut-mandibled Toucan- It is a large bird that is a primary, secondary, and tertiary consumer because it eats fruits, insects, and small nestling birds. (3)
Bananaquit- It is a tiny bird that is both a primary and secondary consumer due to its diet of fruits and small insects. (3)

Jaguarundi- It is a large cat that is a secondary consumer because of its consumption of rabbits and rodents. Unlike most wild felines, it is usually aggressive upon confrontation instead of attempting to avoid it. (3)
Three-Toed Sloth- It is solely a primary consumer due to its exclusive consumption of leaves. They can eat large amounts of food, up to 30% of their own body weight. (3)
Jaguar- It is a very large cat that is both a secondary and tertiary consumer because it eats fish, monkey, deer, and even turtles. They are very strong swimmers that can cross large bodies of water. (3)

Kinkajou- They are primary and secondary consumers because of their diet that consists of fruit, especially figs, and many ants. They will live with a single mate for a long period of time and are very vocal, social creatures. (3)
Common Basilisk- They are secondary and tertiary consumers because they eat scorpions, fish, and insects. They can sometimes be seen running on water up to distances of twenty meters and are therefore nicknamed the "Jesus Lizard". (3)
Squirrel Monkey- They are primates that are primary and secondary consumers because of tehir diet of fruit and insects. They can sometimes live in groups up to a hundred individuals large! (3)
Paca- The Paca is a small mammal that is a primary consumer because of its diet of fruits and vegetation. They are unique in that they have a thin layer of outer skin that tears when attacked by predators in order to enable escape. (3)
